The Vertigo of Time, by photographer Phyllis B. Dooney, looks at the convergence of the past and present day where all systems and individuals are part of a collective continuum, imbued with both ethereal and concrete inscriptions from the past. It presents a tapestry of everyday black American lives, then and now: business owners, activists, veterans, cooks, farmers, musicians, congregates, mothers and fathers. In photographs, a moving image piece and an audioscape*, The Vertigo of Time renders a prismatic consciousness; here we find a storied history of the Durham area, collectively, in the voices of the descendants from Historic Stagville’s enslaved population.
